Andrew Rosindell M.P., Member of Parliament for Romford, has written to the Secretary of State for Transport to demand urgent action over the unacceptable delays to the refurbishment of the Gallows Corner flyover.
The lack of progress, poor coordination, and widespread disruption have caused serious inconvenience to Romford residents and local businesses.
Andrew is calling for immediate clarity on the revised timeline and better planning to prevent further chaos.
The letter can be found attached below and/or read as follows:
I am writing to express my dismay and that of my constituents over the unacceptable delays to the refurbishment of the Gallows Corner flyover, which as you know, is an extremely busy junction, linking Essex into London.
Gallows Corner also connects the A12 and A127, is one of the most heavily used interchanges in the region. It was originally intended as a temporary structure when first installed in the 1970s but has not been replaced since then, with residents enduring continued congestion, safety issues, and delays. Despite years of campaigning for a full redesign of the junction, a limited refurbishment programme was eventually announced and began earlier this year.
The initial timeline for reopening the flyover was set for September. However, I have now been informed that this date has slipped further, with no clear revised schedule provided to the local community. Even more concerning is the fact that, following the closure, works did not commence in earnest for several weeks, demonstrating a lack of proper coordination and urgency from the responsible authorities.
In addition, simultaneous road closures across the borough, including in Rise Park and Gidea Park, have compounded the disruption and forced traffic onto residential side roads. Many local businesses are now reporting severe loss of trade, and residents face unacceptable journey times, traffic congestion, and in some cases, total gridlock in residential streets.
This is a wholly avoidable situation and a result of poor planning, a lack of communication, and an apparent disregard for the daily lives of the people of Romford and the wider area.
I am therefore asking the Department for Transport to urgently engage with Transport for London to determine the cause of these delays, clarify the revised timeline for completion, and ensure better coordination going forward. Romford has waited far too long for real action at Gallows Corner. We cannot accept further excuses or delays while local people suffer.
I would welcome a response at your earliest convenience and appropriate action to ensure that the junction reopens as quickly as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Rosindell M.P.
Member of Parliament for Romford
