Romford

Following Andrew Rosindell M.P.'s statement yesterday on the "Raise the Colours" campaign, currently spreading across the country, he has taken it upon himself to write to the Leader of Havering Council, Cllr. Ray Morgon, to ensure that our flags are not going to be taken down.

The letter in full can be read below or via the attachment at the bottom of this page.

Dear Ray

Re: “Operation Raise The Colours” – flags displayed by members of the public in Havering

I am writing to you to express my dismay upon hearing reports that our national flags - the Union Jack and the Cross of St. George – are being removed by local authorities all over the country, including nearby boroughs such as Tower Hamlets.

As the Member of Parliament for Romford, I feel strongly that our national and indeed, county flags should be a proud and permanent symbol of our nation’s heritage and that patriotism is something local authorities should encourage, not cancel.

I am sure you would agree that the Union Jack represents the unity of our nation, while the Cross of St. George reflects our English identity, just as the flag of Essex represents our historic local county identity.  All are symbols that that inspire pride and belonging in residents across Romford and Havering more widely.

To see them taken down, or their display discouraged, sends entirely the wrong message. At a time when national identity and community cohesion are more important than ever, I believe that our borough should be leading by example – raising the colours high and showing unwavering respect for the symbols that bind us together.

I am therefore asking you to confirm that Havering Council will not remove any Union Jack, Cross of St. George or Essex flag that are attached to lampposts or on public locations, provided they are installed safely and with respect?

With Havering Council so short of cash, it would not only be a waste of resources to do this, but would also be seen my many, including myself, as very divisive.

Please see my statement on this issue that I published yesterday.

No council or local authority should be removing the symbols of our nation from public places that cause no risk.

I look forward to your response and to working with to ensure Havering continues to fly our flags with pride!

Yours sincerely,

Andrew
