Andrew Rosindell M.P., Member of Parliament for Romford and long-time advocate for animal welfare, joined The Kennel Club in calling for urgent reforms to dog breeding regulations that are currently harming responsible breeders and puppy buyers alike.
During a recent meeting with representatives from The Kennel Club, Mr. Rosindell discussed the unintended consequences of the 2018 Licensing of Activities Involving Animals Regulations. The legislation, while well-intentioned, has discouraged many small-scale, high-welfare breeders from continuing their work—creating a gap in the market increasingly filled by unscrupulous sellers.
A new report from The Kennel Club highlights inconsistencies in how breeding licences are issued and the financial burdens placed on ethical breeders. These challenges, the report argues, are undermining efforts to ensure puppies are bred in healthy, caring environments.
Mr. Rosindell commented:
“As a lifelong dog lover, I am deeply concerned by the findings of this report. It is vital that we support responsible, low-volume breeders who prioritise the health and welfare of their dogs. These breeders play a crucial role in giving our beloved pets the best start in life.”
The Kennel Club continues to advocate for a more balanced licensing system that supports ethical breeding practices and protects the welfare of dogs across the UK.
