Surrender of Brexit Freedoms
by Andrew Rosindell M.P.
The recent Victory in Europe Day commemorations in London and locally here in Romford, reminded us that our freedom can never be taken for granted. On countless occasions over the centuries, our forebears fought to defend these islands and the liberties that we, the British people enjoy today. We owe it to them to never allow our freedom to be lost, or our British way of life diminished or surrendered. So, it is with a feeling of utmost dismay that I sit on the green benches in the House of Commons watching our own government doing exactly that. Whether it be handing power back Brussels against the democratic wishes of the British people; the surrender of the strategically vital Chagos Islands to an ally of China at the cost of £30 billion; or their complete failure to stop illegal immigration into our country, Labour are betraying Britain!
Havering voted overwhelmingly, 70% to 30% to leave the European Union, because we wanted to take back control of our country, control our borders, make our own laws and keep our money here at home. Yet now, Labour’s so-called ‘Reset’ with the EU tramples all over what we voted for. Instead of having the freedom to make our own decisions in Britain’s best interests, we will be forced to follow EU laws; our poor fisherman will be sacrificed, allowing the EU to retain fishing rights in our waters until 2038; and the European Court of Justice will have the final say over disputes, effectively putting Britain back under the rule of this unaccountable foreign court. Labour is also paying untold billions over to Brussels, effectively handing them a blank cheque! This is a betrayal of everything Brexit stood for.
Like me, the people of Romford want Britain to be independent of Europe and not under the thumb of Brussels once again. As I said in the House of Commons last week, this so called “deal” is a surrender of our hard-won Brexit freedoms. Like with so many other things that are happening today, Labour never told the British people they would do this at the General Election last year. They kept their real intentions quiet! As Romford’s M.P., I will be true to my word and stand firm in opposing this surrender deal and defend the democratic choice the British people made on 23rd June 2016, to leave the European Union. The fight for true British sovereignty goes on!
