Andrew Rosindell MP, Member of Parliament for Romford, has voiced strong opposition to reported plans by the Labour Government to permit the selling off allotments across the country in order to build new developments.
If you feel like this is unjust and that allotments should remain an integral part of our local community, you can have your say in the survey below.
I am deeply concerned by suggestions that allotments across the country could be sold off under plans being considered by the Labour Government. This could have a hugely detrimental effect on our “town and country borough” of Havering.
Such a policy would be socially and environmentally damaging, another very short-sighted action by this Labour government!
The 1925 Allotments Act was introduced to give people, particularly those without gardens of their own, access to green space where they can grow their own fruit and vegetables. We have many allotments in the Romford constituency, many of which I have visited over the years as both a local Councillor and M.P.
Allotments offer people a healthy, outdoor activity, improve mental wellbeing, bring neighbours together, and foster a sense of pride and community. At a time when many families are facing rising costs and looking for more sustainable ways to live, these spaces must be protected and I will lead a campaign to do that across Romford and Hornchurch.
We are so fortunate to have twelve allotment sites across my constituency, including in Collier Row, Hornchurch, Gidea Park, Ardleigh Green and Romford town centre itself. They are thriving, productive, and valued by the entire community.
Selling off allotments would be an attack on a tradition that has served local neighbourhoods well for generations. Havering is and must remain a “town and country borough” and I will fight to keep it that way!
